Ram Pal Singh, the president of the All India Primary Teachers’ Federation, passed away on September 22.
Ram Pal Singh embarked on his professional journey as a teacher at the age of 21. Recognizing the numerous challenges faced by educators in the country then, he decided to join the teachers’ union. His aim was to improve the service conditions, pay scales, and the rights of teachers. His commitment to this cause led to his election as the general secretary of the Uttar Pradesh state branch, an affiliate of the All India Primary Teachers’ Federation (AIPTF), in 1985.
He held this post continuously for 15 years.
In 1993, Ram Pal Singh assumed the position of general secretary at AIPTF, demonstrating his leadership and dedication towards the welfare of teachers. Four years later, in 1997, he ascended to the role of president of the All India Primary Teachers’ Federation, a position he retained till the end. Under his leadership, AIPTF achieved significant milestones in advocating for the rights and well-being of educators across India.
He also served as a member of various government bodies, including the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), the National University of Educational Planning and Administration (NUEPA), the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), and the Governing Council and Executive Committee of the National Mission of Sarva Shikshak Abhiyan (SSA).
Ram Pal Singh was an Executive Board Member of Education International, a global umbrella organization representing over 400 teachers’ organizations in 171 countries.
