Tinder gives a better chance at love for money but only for ‘worthy’ candidates

Finding love isn’t easy, especially on dating apps, unless you have cracked the ‘dating’ algorithm or you have the money to pay for the subscription, which does not guarantee that you will find the love of your life, but does put you on the front row. What if even that’s not working out? Well, you can subscribe to the ‘Select’ tier on Tinder for $500 (around Rs 41,000) a month, though that’s only if the algorithm deems you worthy.
This ultra-premium, named Tinder Select, costs $499 per month and offers exclusive search and matching features. However, only a small percentage of Tinder’s most active users, less than 1 per cent, have been invited to use this new plan, the company told Bloomberg.
“We know that there is a subset of highly engaged and active users who prioritise more effective and efficient ways to find connections, and so we engaged in extensive tests and feedback with this audience over the past several months to develop a completely new offering,” said Tinder Chief Product Officer Mark Van Ryswyk.
Tinder says that it will open applications for Select from time to time, letting users pay the $500 and get access to some elite features.
For a $500 a month or yearly fee of around $6,000, subscribers will be granted access to new features such as “VIP” search, and you can scout through the most after profiles, then you can directly message the person you like without matching, and others would see your picture in their Likes You section, even if they haven’t subscribed to any of TInder’s subscription tiers.
Similar to other subscriptions, the Select will grant you a ‘Select’ badge, telling users that you are paying $500 a month looking for the love of your life.
If you’re interested and have $500, you can choose to apply for the Select subscription. To qualify, your profile must pass our 5-Point Select Screen for high-profile quality and engagement. Your profile should have at least 5 interests, 4 pictures, a bio of at least 15 characters, show a relationship intent, and be photo verified. Though applying doesn’t guarantee a subscription, Tinder will screen your profile and let you know if you are eligible to pay them the money.
While the price may seem steep, Tinder’s $500 ‘Select’ subscription is not anywhere near how much these exclusive dating apps charge. Match Group’s The League, an invite-only dating app that caters to “ambitious, career-oriented singles,” charges up to $1000 a week to find people the love of their life.
Match Group, Tinder’s parent company, reported a six per cent year-over-year increase in direct revenue, earning $475 million in Q2 2023. Although the number of subscribers declined by four per cent to 10.5 million, Match Group President Gary Swidler believes that Tinder Select could significantly impact the company’s overall revenue.
