Woman with mirror-image organs treated at Gurgaon hospital | Gurgaon News

GURGAON: A 62-year-old woman with two rare genetic conditions has successfully been treated by doctors at a city hospital.
The patient, who was suffering from severe pain due to gallbladder stones, was found to have situs inversus — a rare genetic condition in which the organs in the chest and abdomen are positioned in a mirror image of normal human anatomy. Adding to the complexity, the patient also had dextrocardia, a condition where the heart is positioned towards the right side of the chest.
These extraordinary anatomical anomalies posed intricate challenges during the gallbladder stone removal surgery, doctors said.
On examination, doctors found that the patient’s gallbladder was located on the left side, while it is generally located on the right. She was immediately admitted to hospital and advised to undergo laparoscopic gallbladder surgery. Because the patient was in excruciating pain, the family decided to proceed with the treatment.
Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive technique in which a camera and specialised instruments are inserted through small incisions. According to general surgeon Dr Amit D Goswami of Manipal Hospital, whose team carried out the surgery, the case presented unique hurdles due to the reversed placement of organs.
“This was a challenging case as the surgical procedure on a patient with both situs inversus and dextrocardia necessitated meticulous planning. The complete transposition of organs demanded the utmost precision and dexterity. This case is one of the very few reported instances in Delhi-NCR, with only 4-5 similar cases documented thus far. Genetic maldevelopment has been identified as a potential cause of this condition. The surgery, which typically takes approximately 30 minutes, required an hour due to the complexities involved. The patient had no other comorbidities.”
The surgery was successfully conducted in the last week of May. The patient is now recovering at home, doctors said.
