KOTTAYAM: An anti-narcotic squad of police had to face around 13 ferocious dogs, reportedly trained to attack anyone wearing khaki, on Sunday night, when it went to raid a person suspected to be a drug dealer at his rented house at Kumaranalloor here.
The suspect, Robin George (35) of Kosamattom colony, managed to escape in the melee while police seized 18kg ganja from the house. Police said he had been residing in the house, which had a vast compound, for the past one-and-a-half years. Inside the huge compound wall, there were several dog cages, in which he reared costly and rare breeds of dogs. The compound itself wore a mysterious look with scrapped vehicles and walls with paintings and ‘Delta K9’ written on them.
The anti-narcotic squad members, in plainclothes, had reached the house around 10pm and tried to speak to George on the pretext of buying some ganja after calling him near the compound wall. “There was another customer present in the compound at that time. George jumped over the wall and escaped after getting suspicious about the visitors. The other person also escaped,” a police officer said.
The police team was attacked by dogs on entering the compound. Two dogs of American Pit Bull breed were inside the house while dogs of breeds like German Shepherd and Cane Corso were in the compound. The team members escaped from these dogs with great difficulty and they could raid the house only after dog squad members were called and they brought the dogs under control.
Kottayam SP K Karthik said the accused had approached a dog trainer, but he refused to cooperate with George as the latter insisted on training the dogs to bite anyone wearing khaki. A special team under Kottayam DSP has been formed to probe the case.
The ganja was found in two shoulder bags placed on a bed. Police said the neighbours were not aware of George’s drug dealings as he had little contact with them. He had reportedly told them that he was into dog training and he was also running a dog hostel. His wife, who was staying with him earlier, had reportedly gone to her home after delivery.
The accused had used dogs to threaten a police squad that came to his house earlier also.
