NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday took a tough stand over the delay by the Centre in clearing 70 names for judgeship recommended by the various high courts. These names have been pending before the government for the last 10 months.
The top court also questioned the Centre over the delay in clearing the names of 9 people recommended by its collegium and of 7 others whose names were reiterated by the collegium for judgeship in constitutional courts.
The two-judge SC bench, which also included Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia, told the attorney general that nothing had happened in the last seven months after the last hearing in the case.
Expressing concern, Justice Kaul said “I have a lot to say but I am holding myself. I am quiet today because attorney seeks one week time to respond. But I will not be quiet on the next date.”
The bench said it will take up the case after every ten days till some progress is made. It posted the case for further hearing on October 9.
