AGRA: A tourist from Delhi who had come to visit the Taj Mahal was attacked by a group of men in Agra after his car accidentally hit one of them.
A video showcasing the tourist being beaten with rods and batons went viral on social media. The incident took place on Sunday near the Basai police outpost on Fatehabad road under the jurisdiction of Tajganj police station.
The viral clip was recorded by a CCTV camera installed inside a sweet shop where the incident took place.
The video shows the tourist apologising and trying to evade the attack, but the attackers continue to thrash him brutally. Several horrified social media users tagged the UP Police and demanded action against the attackers.
The police on Tuesday said an FIR was registered against eight locals under IPC section 147 (rioting), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), and 506 (criminal intimidation) on a complaint by Sub-Inspector Yogesh Kumar, in charge of the Basai outpost. Five accused were arrested.
“Our teams are searching for the three others. No complaint has been filed by the victim; we are trying to identify him,” DCP Suraj Kumar Rai said.
The accused were identified as Deepak, Saurabh, Brijesh, Sunil, and Karan, all aged between 20 and 22 years. They are residents of Karbana village, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Tajganj police station.
Police refuted claims made by some social media users that the attackers were Kanwariyas or devotees on Parikrama (circumambulation).
“The claims that the attackers were devotees are not substantiated. They can be seen wearing footwear in the video of the incident. Parikrama is done barefoot. The accused are local residents. Their confrontation with a tourist resulted in the latter being attacked,” the DCP said.
SHO Tajganj, Devendra Shanker Pandey, said, “During interrogation, the accused said that the driver of the car had run over a person’s leg, which led to a dispute. One of the accused suffered an injury on his leg. A few eyewitnesses said that the car had a Delhi number plate. We are verifying the CCTV footage and trying to identify the victim”.
In 2017, a couple from Lausanne in Switzerland was chased and attacked with stones and sticks by a group of youths in Fatehpur Sikri, 44km away from the Taj Mahal. Quentin Jeremy Clerc had suffered a fractured skull, and Marie Droz had fractures to her hand. Later, three accused were arrested.
