Celebrating 20 years of the Vibrant Gujarat Summit, the investor gathering first organised in 2003 when he led the Gujarat government, PM Narendra Modi on
Wednesday expressed confidence that India will soon emerge as a “global economic powerhouse”.
He also highlighted work done by the BJP-led governments in Gujarat as well as the Centre – setting the tone for a high-voltage campaign ahead of the 2024 general election.
New projects
At an event in Gujarat’s Chhota Udepur district, Modi on Wednesday said he does not have a house in his name, but his government turned lakhs of daughters in the country to house-owners, highlighting work done in the housing sector.
Modi, who was on a two-day visit to Gujarat starting Tuesday, spoke at the launch of various development projects worth over Rs 5,000 crore, including projects worth Rs 4,500 crore related to education sector, in Bodeli town of the tribal-dominated district, where he also held a roadshow.
An attack
At an event in Vadodara, organised by the BJP, Modi alleged that opposition parties stalled the women’s reservation bill for three decades, and are now trying to divide women on the lines of caste and religion when the bill has been passed – in an oblique reference to several opposition leaders seeking sub-quotas for OBC and Muslims within the proposed 33% women quota in Lok Sabha and state assemblies.
Godhra recall
When the first Vibrant Gujarat Summit was held in 2003, he was a first-time chief minister and was facing a crisis caused by the 2002 Godhra tragedy and state-wide violence in its aftermath, Modi said in Ahmedabad on Wednesday.
“Those with an agenda” predicted that youth, industry and business will leave Gujarat, he said, claiming that there was a “conspiracy to defame” the state globally.
He added that the summit, nevertheless, became a medium to showcase Gujarat’s decision-making process, showcase the industrial capacity of India, and also its cultural tradition to the world.
