GUWAHATI: A mob went on a rampage Monday night and burned down an official vehicle belonging to IGP (Narcotics, border affairs and Zone-II) Kabib K in Imphal city when the officer and his escorts were caught in a protest by women demanding an audience with CM N Biren Singh.
The IGP was unhurt as he had come out of the vehicle. Separately, an unidentified group shot and wounded a security personnel, and two houses were set ablaze by miscreants in restive Manipur.
Following the attack on IGP’s vehicle and his security, authorities have arrested 30 people and a curfew has been imposed in the affected area.
At least 20 people were wounded Monday when security forces used tear gas to disperse a large group of women protesting on a road, after they were denied permission to meet the CM. Some miscreants vandalised two vehicles belonging to the Rapid Action Force in the ensuing chaos. The IGP was also caught in the melee.
Manipur police issued an appeal to the public not to engage in anti-social activities and to avoid obstructing the movement of security forces, with the warning that legal action will be taken against any deviation or obstruction.
The situation in some regions remains tense, with sporadic firing, arson, and unruly mob gatherings reported in the past 24 hours. A security personnel was wounded by pellet shots when miscreants fired in the Torbung area near Kangvai in Bishnupur district. Furthermore, two houses in Phougakchao Mamang Leikai were torched by unidentified people in the district.
In response to another tragic act in Imphal East district on Saturday evening, where Lucy Marem was brutally murdered, authorities have decided to extend financial assistance to her family. During a meeting between United Naga Council, Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity, and CM N Biren Singh, it was agreed to provide Rs 10 lakh to the next of kin as compensation, along with an additional Rs 5 lakh to cover ritual requirements and educational needs for Marem’s daughter. The daughter will be offered a government job once she meets the eligibility criteria based on her educational qualifications.
