NEW DELHI: Hours before the NDA meeting on Tuesday, both Chirag Paswan and his estranged uncle Pashupati Kumar Paras staked their claim on the Hajipur Lok Sabha seat, which was represented by Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) founder Ram Vilas Paswan. Both factions of the LJP took part in the NDA meeting.
Speaking to reporters, Chirag said he never had any issue with the BJP and he left the NDA only because Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar was part of the alliance. “Nitish Kumar will harm any alliance he joins. How can he be acceptable to the people of the country when he has been rejected by his own people in Bihar?” he asked.
Chirag, who heads LJP (Ram Vilas), said the BJP has addressed his concerns on both the next Lok Sabha and Bihar polls. He said his main demand was that the BJP should stick to the same seatsharing arrangement as in 2019 when the undivided LJPunder his late father had contested six Lok Sabha seats and one Rajya Sabha berth was given as well.
“It will be against coalition dharma for me to speak about the details of my discussions with BJP leaders. But yes, my party’s concerns about Lok Sabha and assembly polls were part of the deliberations and they have been addressed positively by the BJP,” he said.
Paras, a cabinet minister in the Narendra Modi government, said he had no issue with Chirag joining the NDA but made it clear that he would contest from Hajipur in 2024. “There is no question of me leaving the Hajipur seat. His (Chirag) claim for Hajipur seat is baseless. Let him contest from Jamui. Why is he betraying the people who voted him to Parliament?” he asked.
Earlier in the day, Chirag claimed that the NDA in Bihar would win all 40 Lok Sabha seats and would win the next state polls in 2025 too. “I have not joined the NDA for any ministerial berth but to make the alliance stronger and ensure the return of Narendra Modi as PM,” he said.
While the two-time MP maintained that he won’t say anything against his uncle, Chirag hinted that all was not well in the Paras camp which has five MPs. He said some MPs were not coming out due to the risk of the anti-defection law.
