Apple: Global smartphone sales fall to lowest in a decade: How Apple, Samsung and other brands performed

[ad_1]

Global smartphone volumes sold in the third quarter of 2023 (Q3 2023) fell 8%, making it the ninth consecutive quarter to record a decline year-over-year (YoY) basis. However, on a quarter-over-quarter (QoQ) basis, the sell-through volumes grew 2%, a report said.
According to Counterpoint’s Market Pulse service, volumes declined YoY largely due to slower than expected recovery in consumer demand. However, the positive performance in September due to the sale of the new iPhones is seen as a sign of positive news ahead.
Samsung remains the leader
Samsung continued to lead the global market, capturing a fifth (20%) of the total sales in Q3 2023. Its new generation of foldables received a mixed response and the Galaxy Flip 5 outsold its counterpart by nearly twice as much. However, it was Samsung’s Galaxy A-series models that remained market leaders in mid-price bands.
Apple was able to capture the second spot with 16% market share despite the limited availability of the iPhone 15 series.
Chinese smartphone brands Xiaomi (12%), Oppo (10%) and Vivo (8%) completed the top 5 list with a YoY decline in sales. In Q3, all these brands worked towards strengthening their positions in key markets like China and India.
Biggest gainers
Honor, Huawei and Transsion Group gained share and were among the only brands to record YoY growth in Q3. Moreover, the Middle East and Africa (MEA) market was the only region to record YoY growth in Q3. Most developed markets, like North America, Western Europe and South Korea, recorded steep declines.
Apple to drive sales in Q4
The market research firm said that iPhone 15 sales during the festive season in India, followed by the 11.11 sales event in China and ending with the Christmas and end-of-year promotions across regions will help the market to halt its series of YoY declines.
