MUMBAI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) earned a revenue of Rs 377.49 crores revenue from the inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), which was held from March 4-26, 2023 in Mumbai at two venues.
As per the BCCI treasurer Ashish Shelar‘s report for the financial year 2022-23, presented during the Annual General Meeting of the cricket body in Goa on Monday, the Board earned a revenue of Rs 377.49 crores from the WPL, which included five teams. An income analysis done in Shelar’s report shows that surplus from the WPL accounted for 6% of the BCCI’s total income for the 2022-23 financial year. 37% of the share of the BCCI’s income in this period came from the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Board earned 38% of its income from the sale of media rights, and 10% from men’s senior international tours.
As per Shelar’s report, the BCCI netted an income of Rs 6,558.80 crore for the financial year 2022-23, compared to an income of Rs 4,360.57 crore generated in the financial year 2021-22.
Mentioning that the 2020-21 season had to be curtailed to just three tournaments due to the outbreak of Covid-19, Shelar stated, “This is to bring to your notice that due to Covid 19, the cricketing season in 20-21 was cut down to only three tournaments. “The domestic season of 2022-22 was at full strength except a few junior tournaments, like Under 16, etc. However, the year 2022-23 brought back all the hopes and confidence to conduct the entire domestic season with enthusiasm (sic),” Shelar told the members of the state associations.
“The baton handed over to me by my predecessors in a very healthy financial position and I will make sure that it grows stronger as time passes to see in a position and where the BCCI stands today is a result of collective effort by all the ex and present officials. The broad horizon of vision in the form of leadership along with strong commitment of all members of the BCCI has taken the sport of cricket to such a respectable height in a span of very few years. The dedication and determination put in by the BCCI has made sure that the BCCI remains ethically and financially strong at all times. The BCCI has proved to the sports world how standard can be maintained in all situations (sic),” Shelar said in his report.
