Before polls, TMC reaffirms support for Mahua Moitra with post | India News

KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, who is facing cash-for-query charges in the Parliament, will lead the party’s Krishnanagar district unit as part of an organisational overhaul announced by Trinamool on Monday ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. This comes alongside the removal of jailed leader Anubrata Mondal as head of the Birbhum district unit.
Moitra had earlier headed the party’s unit in Nadia district, but was removed when the district organisation was split between Krishnanagar and Ranaghat.She succeeds Kallol Khan, the Nakashipara legislator, who is said to be ailing for some time.

The move signifies strong backing from the Trinamool Congress leadership for Moitra, indicating the party’s efforts in optimising its leadership and structure in key regions in anticipation of the 2024 general elections. The Krishnanagar Lok Sabha seat, won by Moitra in 2019, has undergone changes with seven assembly segments. Trinamool is strategically positioning Moitra in Krishnanagar, aiming to build on the party’s success in the region.
Expressing gratitude, the Krishnanagar MP tweeted her “thank you” to West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and the party for her new assignment.

Anubrata Mondal, who has been absent from politics since his arrest in August 2022 and is currently in Tihar jail, has been replaced as the head of the Birbhum district unit. Trinamool Congress has not yet announced his successor, opting instead to task a core committee with overseeing party affairs in the district. The committee will function in the capacity of TMC’s “Birbhum district president”.
