In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, shared his thoughts on how he compares to other tech titans like Steve Jobs and Elon Musk. While acknowledging their accomplishments, Gates also made a subtle jab at their personalities, stating: “Everybody is different. Elon pushes hard, maybe too much. Steve Jobs pushed hard, maybe too much.” According to a report by Business Insider, when asked about himself, Gates laughingly said, “I think of myself as very nice compared to those guys.”
Gates has had an intense equation — first with Jobs and then Musk — with both the men.The Microsoft co-founder also said that when he was in 20s he had too much intensity at work.“In my 20s, I was monomaniacally focused on Microsoft,” he said. “I didn’t believe in weekends or vacations.”
Gates vs Musk and Gates vs Jobs
Gates and Jobs’ rivalry wasn’t just business; it was personal. Both men were fiercely competitive and unafraid to attack each other publicly. Gates accused Jobs’ products of being overpriced and closed off, while Jobs often ridiculed Gates’ focus on market share over aesthetics.
As far his equation with Musk goes, it is a bit complicated. In Walter Isaacson’s book, Gates said that the Tesla CEO was super mean to him. “Once he heard I’d shorted the stock, he was super mean to me, but he’s super mean to so many people, so you can’t take it too personally,” Gates told Isaacson.
In the interview, Gates was asked whether its true that if in early days of Microsoft, he remembered all the license plates of employees’s cars.”It wasn’t that many license plates. We only had a few hundred employees,” Gates said, before adding “I can still tell you when they came in and out.”
He also said that now he looks back at the early days intensity as a positive experience and even today dictates his thinking. “I view every problem through this innovation lens,” he said.
