What
Three Lok Sabha MPs, including its former Telangana president Bandi Sanjay Kumar, figured in the BJP’s first list of 52 candidates released on Sunday for the November 30 state assembly polls.
The BJP has also given ticket to its firebrand Hindutva leader T Raja Singh from his Goshamahal seat after revoking his suspension, effected last year for alleged insulting remarks towards Prophet Mohammad.
A pattern
So far, BJP has given tickets to 21 of its Lok Sabha MPs to contest assembly polls in four states – Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and now Telangana. These states, along with Mizoram, go to polls next month.
The saffron party has decided to field seven MPs each from Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, four from Chhattisgarh and three from Telangana in lists released so far.
Four of the 21 MPs are ministers in the current Union cabinet.
Why
The reasons for fielding MPs in assembly polls seem to differ from state to state.
In Madhya Pradesh, one may say that there is an anti-incumbency factor. But that can’t be said for the other three states where the BJP is not in power.
Political experts and observers point out two broad reasons.
First, the party has sensed weak leadership in its state units. And, due to uncertainty over whether local leaders can grab enough votes, BJP has decided to field Lok Sabha MPs and national-level office-bearers.
Second, there seems to be an attempt on part of the party to bring new leaderships in these states by sidelining camps led by older leaders such as Shivraj Singh Chouhan in MP and Vasundhara Raje in Rajasthan.
