NAGPUR: A 28-year-old man, Ramnath Badwaik, strangled his mother Kamla to death with a handkerchief at their residence at Sant Gajanan Maharaj Nagar on October 18 during a scuffle over a cellphone. Ramnath later tried to perform her last rites by projecting it as a natural death, but his younger brother Deepak exposed him before the police.
Ramnath, a liquor and drug addict, is learnt to have sold his own cellphone some time ago. He was trying to wrench his mother’s handset away from her, which she resisted. Police said Ramnath pushed Kamla down to the floor before using a handkerchief to strangle her.
Kamla had brought up Ramnath and his two brothers after their father left the family when they were young. She sold her gold mangalsutra to save Ramnath after he was bitten by a snake. Ramnath, who was jobless, also used to take money for liquor from his mother, who worked as a labourer.
Ramnath initially tried to take Kamla to private hospitals, but they referred him to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Ramnath had then brought his mother’s body back home. Ramnath, whose wife had left him with the children over his drinking habit, tried to convince his brothers and other relatives to perform Kamla’s last rites.
Police said Ramnath’s brother Deepak then reached Hudkeshwar police station to lodge a complaint. The postmortem was performed on October 19.
