LUCKNOW: The Centre on Friday sanctioned the construction of 1,44,220 additional housing units under the PM Awas Yojana, Rural (PMAY-R) for the 2023-24 fiscal. The development is seen as a fresh move by the BJP government to bolster the implementation of the ambitious scheme ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
In a communique sent to UP rural development, the Centre said that the state government would be required to sanction the houses to the eligible households within a month – that is by August 13. With the addition of new units, the state’s overall target would get revised to 21,68,574 houses.
According to the guidelines, the state government would be required to earmark 60% of the target for SCs and STs, subjected to their availability of the Awas database. The Centre also asked the state government to finalize the district, block and gram panchayat wise and category wise target as per the User manual issued by the government on July 15, 2021.
The Centre said that the state government would now be required to instruct the authorities at the district, block and gram panchayat level to fix the targets and expedite the sanctioning of the houses to ensure timely completion of the houses.
The PMAY-Rural is being implemented in partnership with the state governments to realize the goal of “housing for all” in the rural areas. The Centre has already approved the continuation of the scheme till March 2024 for the completion of the remaining houses within a cumulative target of 2.95 crores.
