RAIPUR: The initial trends of counting of votes indicates that the contest seems close between the two major parties as Congress leads in 45 and BJP in 32 seats around 9am in Chhattisgarh.
As per the early trends available from counting of postal ballots and initial round of counting of votes, Congress is leading in 45 seats and BJP trailing close in a neck to neck contest with 32 seats.
Initially, during the counting of postal ballots, the state Congress President Deepak Baij contesting from Chitrakote (ST) assembly constituency and BJP state chief Arun Sao contesting from Lormi were trailing behind their counterparts but both of them took a lead in later trends.
Counting of votes for all 90 assembly constituencies in Chhattisgarh commenced at 8 am on Sunday, determining the fate of 1181 candidates including 155 women and one third gender candidate, who tested their electoral fortunes in November polls.
Polls were held in two phases on November 7 and 17 for the 90-member Assembly. Voter turnout stood at 76.31 per cent.
Election officials said that elaborate arrangements have been made in all the constituencies where counting is being taken up under a three-layered security umbrella in the counting premises.
A clear picture of composition of the new assembly is expected to emerge by 2.30pm. indicating whether the Congress would retain power for the second consecutive term or the BJP would trounce the grand old party after a span of five years.
