MUMBAI: As opposition veterans lined up on stage in Mumbai under the INDIA banner, consensus on key issues continued to elude them.
With 63 representatives from 28 political parties putting heads together at the conclave, the appointment of a convener and the choice of a logoremained contentious points; so did the demand for a caste-based census in certain states.”It is true, we could not take a decision on key issues, but it will have no impact on INDIA activities,” said aCongress MP.
According to UBT Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut, a demand was made by Bihar CM Nitish Kumar to endorse the call for a caste-based census in the INDIA resolution. He was backed by Samajwadi Party and RJD. However, there was strong opposition from West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee. Eventually, it was left to the 14-member coordination committee to take up the issue at an appropriate time.Similarly, the plan for a logo and the appointment of a convener for the INDIA bloc was deferred. “It was felt that there is no need for a convener and the coordination committee can take policy decisions in the absence of a convener. On the logo, it was felt that since all parties have their symbols, the logo will create confusion,” he said.
However, the meet was not short on staking out common ground against the BJP-led government. Price rise, unemployment, loss of civil liberties, governance deficit in Manipur, were among issues that resonated across the board and with most party representatives.
NCP chief Sharad Pawar said in the last nine years, the NDA government has neglected issues concerning youth and farmers and as a result, there is a spurt in unemployment. AICC chief Mallikarjun Kharge said while Manipur burnt or when the country came under the grip of Covid-19 or during demonetisation, the Prime Minister did not consider calling a special session of Parliament. “PM Modi has convened a special session of Parliament now without the knowledge of the business advisory committee or the leader of opposition,” he said. “BJP is rattled by the massive response to INDIA,” Kharge added.
CPM’s Sitaram Yechury said, “We are united in our efforts to save democracy and uphold the guarantees given by the Constitution.”
