DALTONGANJ: A daring dacoity was committed on the S-9 coach of moving Sambalpur-Jammu Tawi Express between Latehar and Barwadeeh railway stations under the Dhanbad division of the East Central Railway, on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.
Eight passengers were assaulted with the butt of a country-made pistol (Katta) by the robbers. 13 passengers were robbed of by around 10-12 dacoits. Barring one, all others were in the age group of 25 to 30 years. Two of them were armed. Four had their faces covered. One of them appeared middle aged.
The dacoits who are suspected to have boarded the train at Jharkhand’s Latehar station opened fire in the passage of coach S-9 around midnight. RPF inspector incharge-of the Garhwa road junction, Banarsi Yadav, said, “We have recovered one empty cartridge. It was lying in the passage ” adding there was no bullet mark on the coach though.
“It was fired only to scare the passengers of the coach. No passengers sustained any firearms injury. The robbers injured 8 passengers with the butt of the country-made weapon only” added the RPF inspector.
Doctor Chaman Kr Bhardwaj who treated the injured at platform number 1 of the Daltonganj railway station at night corroborated the statement of RPF saying “All eight passengers sustained injury by a blunt object. They were given first aid by our team. Six had lacerated wounds. Two were given stitches. There was no firearm injury”
Incidentally, no woman or child was hurt by the criminals. But women and girls were robbed of their earrings and necklaces. “All 8 injured were males,” added Bhardwaj.
RPF inspector Yadav said “This express train had an escort party of three cops whereas there were 20 coaches in it.” The coach where the criminals fired and looted was the fourth from the tail end of the 20-coach train.
“The criminals were drunk. They had boarded this train at Latehar railway station. The train left Latehar at 23.20pm. It reached Barwadeeh railway station at 23.50pm and left at 23.57pm. The dacoity was committed between 23.20pm and midnight”, said the RPF inspector incharge.
TTE on duty AC Munda informed the Daltonganj railway station officials, GRP and RPF about the dacoity committed in the train.
“The train reached Daltonganj railway station at 12.40am. And here all bedlam broke out. The injured and other passengers raised a great hue and cry. The train was detained at the Daltonganj railway station for 3 hours and it started its onward journey at 3.40am,” said the railway traffic inspector Anil Kumar Tiwary.
The injured passengers refused to go to MMCH Daltonganj by the ambulance as they wanted to see doctors there right at the platform. DC Palamu Shashi Ranjan was informed about this episode at night who immediately rushed DDC Ravi Anand and SDO sadar Rajesh Kumar Sah to the Daltonganj railway station.
The civil surgeon Palamu Dr Anil Kumar meanwhile rushed Dr Chaman Kr Bhardwaj and team to the platform to provide first aid. Two of the injured were given anti tetanus shots too.
There was no chain pulling to stop the train, confirmed the station superintendent of the Daltonganj railway station Umesh Kumar who was on leave but had gathered details of the incident. “I spoke to one of the engine crew members of this train who denied there was any chain pulling to stop the train.”
On being asked if there was no chain pulling then how the robbers disappeared from the coach to which the RPF inspector incharge Banarsi Yadav said, “There was a caution note to slow down. The caution note was issued by the Barkakana railway junction. The train got slow ahead of the Barwadeeh railway station and here the train robbers got down from the running train and vanished”.
An FIR has been lodged with the GRP Daltonganj by a passenger Manas Chand Mohitik and 12 other passengers. Cash and belongings including a dozen cell phone worth over Rs 1.5 lakh were looted.
“One of the dacoits was being called by his accomplices as Ajay. Later the train was fully escorted from Daltonganj to Chopan by the RPF inspector incharge Banarsi Yadav and his team” said one railway official.
