Deepfakes: New set of regulations soon to tackle deepfakes: IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw | India News

NEW DELHI: Union minister for electronics and information technology and communications, Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday said that a new set of regulations will be introduced soon to tackle deepfakes.
He chaired a meeting with social media platforms and stakeholders, on the issue of deepfakes amid concerns over misuse of technology and the government’s firm resolve to push digital platforms to crack down on deepfakes.
Addressing the rising incidents of deepfakes, Vaishnaw said, “Social media platforms agree that clear actionable work is needed to detect and prevent deepfakes and strengthen reporting”.
He further informed that the next meeting will be held in the first week of December to follow up on the decisions taken today.
The meeting comes after PM Modi had expressed concerns regarding “problematic” use of artificial Intelligence to create deepfakes to target people.

PM Modi had urged the media persons to educate the people about the negative effects of using artificial intelligence to spread harmful content such as misrepresentation of individuals in deepfakes.
Union minister for electronics & technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar also assured to create a framework including considering a new legislation to ensure that deepfakes or misinformation at large do not pose a threat to the safety and trust of the 1.2 billion Indians who will be on the Indian internet.
