“The AAP government has indulged in corruption and it is opposing the Bill because it wants to hide its misdeeds. It wants to control the vigilance department so that crores spent on CM’s bungalow is not questioned,” the Union home minister said.
He also attacked the opposition for supporting AAP and said “please don’t compromise the interests of people of Delhi to save your fledgling alliance.” “Despite your alliance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will win majority in the Lok Sabha elections and return for a third term. So do not support AAP’s corruption for a losing cause,” he said.
The AAP had made opposition to the Delhi Services Bill a precondition to join the opposition alliance INDIA. It threatened to walk out of the alliance ahead of the second meeting in Bengaluru if the Congress did not openly oppose the Bill.
The Union home minister said the Constitution empowers Centre to make laws for Delhi-NCR. He refuted allegations that the Bill introduced by the Centre breaches the Supreme Court judgment – which had given the elected government of Delhi the power to control services except on three issues.
The Bill seeks to replace the National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Ordinance, 2023, on the control of services in Delhi.
The Centre had promulgated the Ordinance on May 19, 2023. This was eight days after the Supreme Court granted more powers to the Delhi government over services in the national capital.
