Digital India Programme: Cabinet expands Digital India programme: New jobs, courses for students and more

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the expansion of the Digital India programme with a total outlay is Rs 14,903 crores.

Under this expansion, the government aims to re-skill and up-skill over 6 lakh IT professionals, train over 2.50 lakh people and provide support for startups, among others.
“Today’s Cabinet decision on the expansion of the Digital India programme is a testament to our commitment towards a technologically empowered India,” Modi posted on X.

“It will boost our digital economy, provide better access to services and strengthen our IT ecosystem,” he added.

Union IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that Digital India programme is democratising technology.

Digital India programme will enable the following:

  1. The governemnt will re-skill and up-skill 6.25 lakh IT professionals under the FutureSkills Prime Programme.
  2. It will also train 2.65 lakh persons in information security under the Information Security & Education Awareness Phase (ISEA) Programme.
  3. The Centre will add 540 services under the Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance (UMANG) app/ platform. At present over 1,700 services are already available on UMANG.
  4. The government will also add nine more supercomputers under National Super Computer Mission. This is in addition to 18 supercomputers already deployed.
  5. Bhashini, the AI-enabled multi-language translation tool (currently available in 10 languages) will be rolled out in all 22 scheduled languages.
  6. Modernisation of the National Knowledge Network (NKN) which connects 1,787 educational institutions.
  7. Digital document verification facility under DigiLocker will now be available to MSMEs and other organisations;
  8. The governemtn will support 1,200 startups in tier 2/3 cities.
  9. There will be three Centres of Excellence in AI on health, agriculture and sustainable cities.
  10. Cyber-awareness courses for 12 crores college students.
  11. New initiatives in the area of cyber security including development of tools and integration of more than 200 sites with National Cyber Coordination Centre.
