PUNE: The city crime branch on Monday night arrested Dr Pravin Deokate, the suspended head of the orthopaedic department at the state-run Sassoon General Hospital, in drug kingpin Lalit Patil‘s escape case. Patil had fled the facility’s prisoners ward on October 2.
On Tuesday, crime branch inspector Nandkumar Bidwai and his team produced Dr Deokate before a city court, which ordered his remand in police custody till December 7.Dr Deokate is the 15th person to be arrested in the escape case so far. His arrest follows a similar action against Yerawada central jail’s chief medical officer, Sanjay Kashinath Marsale,53, earlier on Monday. “We are questioning three more Sassoon hospital doctors,” a senior police officer said.
Deputy commissioner of police (crime) Amol Zende told TOI, “Deokate’s name cropped up during the interrogation of co-accused and Sassoon hospital peon Mahendra Yashwant Shevate,57, who was arrested on November 27.”
