NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to hear an interim bail application filed by English professor and activist Shoma Sen in Elgar Parishad case on grounds of her deteriorating health
A bench of Justices Aniruddha Bose and S V N Bhatti posted the case for hearing to October 4 on the plea of NIA.
The top court had last month granted bail to civil rights activists Vernon Gonsalves and Arun Ferreira who were arrested in August 2018 in Elgar Parishad case and had been in jail since then for their alleged link with a banned Maoist group.
The court had said that there was no such evidence to prove their intention to be involved in a terrorist act and mere holding of certain literature which propagate violent acts cannot be termed as terroist act under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 .
There are 16 accused who were arrested in Elgar Parishad-Bhima Koregaon case and one of them, Father Stan Swamy, a tribal rights activist, died in custody.
Two other accused– activist and law teacher Sudha Bhardwaj and Telugu poet Varavara Rao– have been granted bail. While Bhardwaj was granted default bail, Rao was granted bail on medical grounds.
Another accused Gautam Navalakha has been kept under house arrest on the direction of the apex court.
