Shakti Kapoor
Born on September 3, 1952, Sunil Kapoor aka Shakti Kapoor is the son of Sikander Lal Kapoor, a tailor in Connaught Place, Delhi and Susheela Kapoor, a housewife. He was second of the four kids born to his parents. His siblings include Renu, Parvin and Rummy Kapoor. In an interview with TOI in 2003, Shakti had revealed that he was thrown out of three schools, Holy Child, Frank Anthony Public School and Salwan Public School for bad behaviour. He got into fights because he wanted to have his way at all costs. Despite hailing from a humble Punjabi Hindu family, he was driven by lavish dreams to rebel against his father. Although his father wanted him to join the family business, Shakti was determined to run a travel agency.
The actor started modeling during his college days and used to earn money by doing modeling assignments. He worked with several travel agencies, made contacts and learnt about ticketing and visa. His father had assured him he would help him set up his own place but he changed his mind later. Shakti’s friends filled the form of Films and Television Institute of India, Pune, on his behalf and he got in. He made his debut with ‘Khel Khilari Ka’ which starred Darmendra and Hema Malini in 1977.
However, it was the years 1980 and 1981 that truly marked Shakti Kapoor’s ascent as an actor in Bollywood. During this period, he gained prominence for portraying antagonistic characters in two pivotal movies, ‘Qurbani’ and ‘Rocky’. His compelling performances as a villain in these films set the stage for his future success.
Shakti Kapoor has very successfully created an identity for himself in the Indian film industry over the years. The actor, who is known for both, comic and villainous roles, has featured in over 600 movies.
Shivangi Kapoor
Born on March 12, 1964, Shivangi Kolhapure comes from a renowned Brahmin Kolhapure family, which has deep roots in the entertainment and musical industry. She is the daughter of Pandharinath Kolhapure, a professional musician, and Nirupama Kolhapure. She was raised with her two sisters, Tejaswini and Padmini Kolhapure. Shivangi was a part of films like, ‘Yaadon Ki Baaaraat’ and ‘Do Anjaane’ as a child actor. She officially made her debut with ‘Kismet’ in 1980 alongside Shakti Kapoor. Although their pairing onscreen didn’t work much, they fell in love with each other and their real-life jodi is a hit today. The couple has two kids, Shraddha Kapoor and Siddhanth Kapoor.

Born on March 3, 1987, Shraddha is the perfect blend of Punjabi and Maharashtrian. She was raised in a Marathi cultural setting as her maternal relatives lived in Maharashtra. Shraddha Kapoor did her schooling from Jamnabai Narsee School. At the age of 15, she shifted to the American School of Bombay, where she was schoolmates with actors, Athiya Shetty and Tiger Shroff. She then enrolled into Boston University to major in psychology, but she left the course in her freshman year to appear in her debut film ‘Teen Patti’ in 2010.
Hailing from a family of actors, Kapoor desired to become an actress since a young age. Her elder brother Siddhanth Kapoor, her two aunts, Padmini Kolhapure and Tejaswini Kolhapure are all are a part of the Indian film industry. She is the great-niece of Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Meena Khadikar, Usha Mangeshkar and Hridaynath Mangeshkar. The actress’ grandfather Pandharinath Kolhapure is Lata Mangeshkar‘s cousin. Shraddha earlier said in an interview, “It’s like my entire childhood was meant to prime me in the best way for the rest of my life. My mom sings like a dream and is almost always singing at home. My nana was a renowned classical singer and musician, so there was a lot of music around me while growing up, and it brought the family together, especially during Ganpati every year. My masis act and sing as well. And seeing my dad and aunts being actors only made me want to do the same. I’ve realised that there can be nothing better than to be in an environment of creative people where the discussions are about art.”
While being amidst so many actors and singers made her want to walk the same career path, Shraddha’s personal relationship with her family is similar to that of most of us. She added, “I like to see my life as a Pixar movie or a Sooraj Barjatya film. I feel so blessed that I am close to my extended family and cousins and that the entire family meets so often. While we have the same simple tiffs, we also support each other, and I love that. It’s tough to describe my relationship because how do you put in words the family dynamics of Hum Aapke Hain Kaun or The Incredibles?”
Siddhanth Kapoor
Shakti Kapoor and Shivangi Kapoor’s elder child Siddhanth Kapoor was born on July 6, 1984. Kapoor pursued film making and acting courses at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. He began his career as a DJ and later worked as an assistant director for nearly two years under director Priyadarshan, contributing to films like ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’,’Bhagam Bhag’, ‘Chup Chup Ke’, and ‘Dhol’. Originally slated to debut in Soham Shah’s 2012 film ‘Satte Pe Satta’, a remake of the 1982 classic, the project was shelved. Consequently, he made his acting debut in 2013 with the film ‘Shootout at Wadala’, sharing the screen with Anil Kapoor, John Abraham, and Kangana Ranaut. He also worked with his baby sister Shraddha Kapoor in ‘Haseena Parkar’ in 2017.

The Kolhapures:
Pandharinath Kolhapure
Pandharinath Kolhapure was a classical music maestro born on 16th of February, 1930. He hailed from the town of Pandharpur located in Maharashtra state. Pandharinath was a talented vocalist and Veena player. He was the son of Pandit Krishnarao Kolhapure (partner in Balvant Natak Academy along with Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar), an exponent of Natya Sangeet, who had enjoyed the patronage of the Baroda Durbar. Pandharinath’s mother, VijayaBai Mangeshkar Kolhapure was the half-sister of Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar, and sister of Balwantrao Abhisheki, the father of vocalist Jitendra Abhisheki. Pandharinath got married to Nirupama who formerly used to work as ground staff with an Indian airline. He had two siblings Meghnath Kolhapure and Dinkar Kolhapure.
Panditji suffered a heart attack and was in the hospital for four days before he breathed his last on 15 August 2015. The prayer meet was attended by many renowned figures of music and film industry.
Padmini Kolhapure
Padmini Kolhapure was born on November 1, 1965, into a family deeply rooted in the entertainment industry. Her father, Pandharinath Kolhapure, was a notable classical vocalist, and her elder sisters, Shivangi and Tejaswini, were accomplished actresses in their own right. It was within this artistic milieu that Padmini’s passion for acting was nurtured from a young age. She made her debut in Bollywood at the tender age of nine with the film ‘Zindagi’ in 1976, followed by her breakthrough role in Raj Kapoor’s magnum opus, ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’, where she portrayed a young Zeenat Aman. One of the defining moments in Padmini Kolhapure’s career was her association with the iconic filmmaker Raj Kapoor, who recognized her potential and cast her in several memorable films, including ‘Prem Rog’ (1982), where she portrayed the role of a child widow. Her heartfelt performance in the film earned her the prestigious Filmfare Award for Best Actress.

Beyond her acting prowess, Padmini Kolhapure’s contributions to the Indian film industry extended into the realm of playback singing. She lent her melodious voice to several of her film songs, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of her audience. In 2016, Kolhapure turned a designer and started her Indian and Indo-western wear brand, with her friend Sita Talwalkar.
The actress married producer Pradeep Sharma alias Tutu Sharma in 1986. The couple has a son named, Priyank Sharma, who is married to producer Karim Morani’s daughter and Zoa Morani’s sister Shaza Morani.

Padmini Kolhapure and Pradeep Sharma’s son Priyank Sharma was born on February 5, 1990. Being born and raised in a family full of artists, Priyank had a natural leaning towards acting. After his graduation in English Honours, he joined The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York and also learnt acting in London.
Although he was trained in the field of performing arts since childhood, he wanted to become a DJ. Priyank assisted filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi in Shahid Kapoor and Ileana D’Cruz starrer ‘Phata Poster Nikla Hero’ in 2013. He has been doing wonders as DJ by performing at various clubs in Mumbai, Goa, Pune, and New York City. He is also a part of an entertainment company that organises, promotes and manages music-related events and gigs. Later, in 2020, he made his debut with ‘Sab Kushal Mangal’ where he played the lead role of Pappu Mishra.
The actor was in a relationship with producer Karim Morani’s daughter Shaza Morani. They got married in a lavish wedding ceremony in 2021.
Shaza Morani Sharma
Shaza Morani is the younger daughter of producer Karim Morani and Zara Morani. Her elder sister Zoa Morani is an actress who has featured in films and series like, ‘Always Kabhi Kabhi’, Bhaag Johnny’, ‘Dahaad’ and others. Shaza worked as an assistant director on Shah Rukh Khan starrer ‘Happy New Year’ and has aspirations to become a director. After being in a relationship for long, Shaza married her long time boyfriend Priyank Sharma in a dreamy wedding ceremony in 2021.
Tejaswini Kolhapure
Born on January 1, 1980, Tejaswini Kolhapure is the daughter of Pandharinath Kolhapure and his wife Nirupama Kolhapure. She is the youngest sister of Shivangi Kolhapure and Padmini Kolhapure and aunt to Shraddha Kapoor. She started her career as a model and eventually ventured into television and films. She has been a part of TV series like, ‘Mujhe Chand Chahiye’, ‘Saughat’, and ‘Tum Bin’. She also left a mark with her performance in Anurag Kashyap’s film, ‘Ugly’ where she played a depressed young woman who was also an alcoholic.
Tejaswini fell in love with writer, director and producer Pankaj Saraswat. The couple together has a daughter named Vedika Saraswat.

The Mangeshkars :
Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar
Born on December 29, 1900 in Mangeshi, Goa, Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar was a well-known Goan Marathi theatre actor, a Natya sangeet musician and a Hindustani classical vocalist. His father Ganesh Bhatt Bhikoba Navathe Hardikar was a married Karhade Brahmin and his mother Yesubai Rane belonged to the Devdasi community. While his father served as a priest at the famous Mangeshi temple in Goa, his mother was a reputed musician. The father of the Indian vocalist Jitendra Abhisheki was Deenanath’s half-brother.
He started taking singing and Indian classical music lessons at the age of five. Deenanath’s good looks and melodious voice won him popularity in the Marathi theatre. He got married to Narmada (later renamed ‘Shrimati’ by her in-laws) who was the daughter of a prosperous businessman. They had a daughter named Latika, who died in her infancy. Deenanath’s wife died shortly thereafter.
He later married Shrimati’s sister Shevanti in 1927. Deenanath and his second wife had five children namely, Lata, Meena, Asha, Usha, and Hridaynath. Not many know that Lata was actually named Hema. But Deenanath called her Lata in memory of his deceased daughter (Latika). The name stuck and it was by that name that his legendary eldest daughter, Lata Mangeshkar, was widely known. Deenanath passed away in 1942 at the age of 41.

Lata Mangeshkar
Born on September 28, 1929, in Indore, India, Lata Mangeshkar was destined to become a musical icon. She hailed from a family deeply rooted in music, with her father, Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar, being a renowned classical vocalist and theater artist. Growing up in such a musical environment, it was only natural that young Lata would develop a profound passion for singing.
She started her journey as a singer at the tender age of 13 where she made her debut as a playback singer in the Marathi film, ‘Kiti Hasaal’ in 1942. Lata Mangeshkar’s illustrious career spanned over seven decades, during which she recorded over 30,000 songs in various languages, including Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, and many more. Her collaborations with eminent music directors like R.D. Burman, S.D. Burman, and Shankar-Jaikishan are legendary. Her rendition of ‘Ae Mere Watan Ke Logo’ remains a poignant tribute to the Indian armed forces.
However, it was her association with composer Ghulam Haider in the 1948 film ‘Majboor’ that marked her entry into the Hindi film industry. Lata Mangeshkar received numerous accolades and awards, including the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor. She appeared in the Guinness World Records as the most recorded artist in history before being replaced by her sister, Asha Bhosle
Lata Mangeshkar bid adieu to this world after she breathed her last on February 6, 2022 at the age of 92 due to multiple organ failure. The ace singer’s life, family, and prolific body of work have left an indelible mark on the world of music.
Meena Khadikar
Born on September 7, 1931, Meena Mangeshkar is the second eldest child of Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar and Shevanti. Lovingly called as Meenatai, her work extensively revolves around Hindi and Marathi cinemas. She is known for her song, ‘Duniya mein hum aaye hai toh’ from ‘Mother India’, which she sung with her sisters Lata and Usha Mangeshkar. She also has tracks like, ‘Phagun aaya’ from ‘Pilpili Saheb’, ‘Aapne chheen liya dil’ with Mohammed Rafi in the film ‘Farmaish’, ‘Hai mausam yeh mastaana’ from ‘Aabroo’ and ‘Are koi jaao ri piya ko bulao’ from ‘Patrani’ to her credit.
She married Mr DK Khadikar, who passed away around 2011. The couple has two children, Yogesh and Rachana. Meenatai’s son Yogesh has recorded a few songs. Yogesh is married to Jitendra Abhisheki’s daughter.
Asha Bhosle
Asha Bhosle was born as Asha Mangeshkar on September 8, 1933 in Sangli, Maharashtra, into a renowned musical family of Deenanath Mangeshkar and his wife Shevanti. Asha was only nine years old when her father passed away. She and her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar began singing and acting in films to support their family. She sang her first film song ‘Chala Chala Nav Bala’ for the Marathi film Majha Bal (1943). She made her Hindi film debut when she sang the song ‘Saawan Aaya’ for Hansraj Behl’s Chunariya (1948).
Impressively, her singing prowess extends beyond Hindi, as she has lent her melodious voice to songs in more than 20 Indian and foreign languages. Her immense contribution to Indian music earned her accolades, including the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Vibhushan.
When Asha was just 16 years old, she ran away and got married to a Ganpatrao Bhosle, who was 31 at the time. They eventually separated in 1960. Together, they had three children and five grandchildren. Their eldest child, Hemant Bhosle, started as a pilot but later had a short career as a music director. Eventually, he moved to Scotland, where he passed away in September 2015.
Bhosle’s daughter Varsha committed suicide on 8 October 2012. She was 56 years old and worked as a columnist for a publication. Asha’s youngest child, Anand Bhosle, has studied business and film direction. He manages Asha’s career. Her grandson, Chaitanya Bhosle (Hemant’s son) is a part of the world of music. He is a member of India’s first and only boy band, ‘A Band of Boys’.
Asha later married RD Burman in 1980. It was second marriage for both of them. Their partnership lasted until his death.
Hemant Bhosle
Asha Bhosle’s eldest son Hemant Bhosle is known for his memorable musical compositions, gained fame for creating delightful duets featuring Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle. Some of his most recognized works include songs like ‘Aji Kaho Kya Haal Hai’ from the movie ‘Anpadh,’ which were lip-synced by Vijendra Ghatke and Sarika, and ‘Salamat Raho Tum’ from the same film, performed by Ashok Kumar and Sarika.
Tragically, Hemant Bhosle lost his battle with cancer in 2015. Continuing the musical legacy, Hemant’s son, Chaitanya Bhosle, has pursued a career as a singer and has released several albums of his own.
Chaitanya Bhosle
Asha Bhosle’s grandson Chaitanya He is a member of India’s first and only boy band, ‘A Band of Boys’. Apart from being a singer, he has also acted, directed and scored the music for a stage production of the classic ‘Wait Until Dark’. However, he is reportedly keen on his career as a musician. He is yet to work with his grandmother.

Zanai Bhosle
Zanai, born on January 16, 2002, is the granddaughter of Asha Bhosle and daughter of Anand Bhosle and Anuja Bhosle. The young diva is a part of 6 Pack band which is India’s first transgender band. In an old interview, Asha spoke about her granddaughter and revealed that she is trained in Indian classical music and western opera. Zanai is often seen singing and performing with her grandmother during various stage shows.
Usha Mangeshkar
Usha Mangeshkar is the second last child of Deenanath Mangeshkar and his wife Shevanti. Born on December 15, 1935, she has also made her name as a singer in the Indian music industry. She came into the spotlight as a playback singer after singing some devotional songs for the low-budget movie Jai Santoshi Maa (1975), which became an all-time blockbuster. So much so, that she was nominated for the Filmfare Best Female Playback Singer award for her song ‘Main to Aarti’ in that film. Apart from this, she is also popularly known for her song, ‘Mungda’ in ‘Inkaar’. She was also honoured with Lata Mangeshkar Award by the Government of Maharashtra in 2020.
Hridaynath Mangeshkar
The only son of Deenanath Mangeshkar and Shevanti, Hridaynath Mangeshkar was born on October 26, 1937. He is the younger brother of Lata, Meena, Asha and Usha Mangeshkar. He is popularly known as Balasaheb in the music and film industry. Hridaynath has also left his mark on Bollywood, scoring music for select films like ‘Subah,’ ‘Lekin…,’ and ‘Maya Memsaab.’ He joined the political party Shiv Sena in 2009.
He is married to Bharati Malvankar Mangeshkar, daughter of Marathi comedian Damuanna Malvankar. They have two sons, Aadinath Mangeshkar and Baijnath Mangeshkar, and a daughter, Radha Mangeshkar.
Aadinath Mangeshkar
Aadinath Mangeshkar is the third generation torchbearer of the Mangeshkar family and is known for being the son of the Indian music director Hridaynath Mangeshkar and nephew of the legendary Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar. He has many Hindi and Marathi songs like, ‘Aao Bachcho Tumhein Dikhayen’, ‘Watan Ki Raah Mein’, ‘Tum Mile Dil Khile’, ‘Aapan Saare Ithech Rahu’, ‘Yeh Nain Dare Dare’ and others to his credit.
Radha Mangeshkar
Born to Hridaynath Mangeshkar and Bharati Malvankar Mangeshkar, Radha Mangeshkar is an Indian singer and music composer. Being surrounded by people in her family who were closely affiliated with music, she started learning singing from her father from a young age. At the age of 9, she reportedly performed with her father on stage in Bhavsargam. Radha is an expert in Hindustani Classical Music. In 2009, Radha released her solo album, ‘Naav Maaze Shaami’. It was composed by Hridaynath Mangeshkar and was launched by Lata Mangeshkar.
