MediaTek has announced its new flagship chipset – the Dimensity 9300, which takes on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. MediaTek’s new Dimensity 9300 chipset is based on the 4nm process node and brings a new graphics unit with support for hardware-backed ray tracing.
An all-big core CPU, GPU-powered ray tracing
The Dimensity 9300 features an ARM Cortex-X4 core clocked at 3.25GHz, 3x Cortex-X4 cores clocked at a slower 2.85GHz, and 4x Cortex-A720 efficiency cores clocked at 2.0GHz.The new chipset promises to offer a 15% increase in single-core CPU performance and a 40% improvement in multi-core performance compared to the Dimesntiy 9200. The CPU peak performance power consumption is also reduced by 33% compared to the predecessor.
The SoC also comes with a new Immortalis-G720 GPU that promises a 46% improvement in hardware ray tracing performance compared to the previous generation. It also supports a hardware-based ray tracing engine and variable-rate rendering technology, which the company claims to be 46% more powerful than its predecessor. Additionally, the GPU is 40% more power efficient than the previous generation chipset.
MediaTek has partnered with multiple companies to optimise ray tracing in games, including Unity, Unreal, and Messiah engines, providing immersive visual effects to gamers. The company says that it is working towards strengthening the developer ecosystem and collaborating with game manufacturers to build a robust Dimensity game ecosystem.
Double the AI prowess with on-device processing
Dimensity 9300 comes with a new APU 790, which promises to provide double the AI processing power and reduce power consumption by 45%. It can generate images within one second using Stable Diffusion.
The Dimensity 9300 display system uses the chipset’s on-device AI to detect primary objects and adjust the contrast, sharpness, and colour, offering a lifelike video experience. The APU 790 supports NeuroPilot Fusion and large language models with 1B, 7B, and 13B parameters, with scalability up to 33B. As part of MediaTek’s AI ecosystem, the Dimensity 9300 supports advanced mainstream language models.
The Dimensity 9300 chipset supports always-on HDR up to 4K/60fps and cinematic mode at 4K/30fps with real-time bokeh tracking. It also has 4K AI-NR and AI processing for RAW photos and videos.
The Imagiq 990 offers zero-latency video preview with bidirectional direct coupling between ISP and APU. Its 18-bit RAW ISP design features an AI Semantic Analysis Video Engine with 16 categories of scene segmentation adjustment. Additionally, the Dimensity 9300 will support the new Ultra HDR format in Android 14 and has ambient light adaptive HDR recovery technology.
Wi-Fi 7 support
The chipset supports Wi-Fi 7 and MediaTek Xtra Range Technology for better connectivity over long distances. It also includes Multi-Link Hotspot technology that enhances smartphone tethering speeds by up to 3X compared to competitors.
Vivo X100 to be the first Dimensity 9300-powered smartphone
The first smartphones that will feature the Dimensity 9300 chipset are expected to hit the market by the end of 2023. Vivo has already confirmed that their upcoming X100, set to be introduced on November 13 in China, will be the first smartphone to be powered by the Dimensity 9300 chipset.
