NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Friday extended the judicial custody of NewsClick founder Prabir Purkayastha and HR head Amit Chakraborty till October 25 in a UAPA case. Purkayastha and Chakraborty, arrested on October 3 following allegations of receiving foreign funds for disseminating pro-China propaganda through the news portal, were produced in court on the expiry of 10-day judicial custody. Additional sessions judge Hardeep Kaur extended their custody for five more days.
The counsel for Chakravarty submitted before the court that he was not a journalist or editor, nor did he write any article, and was in no way responsible for the content published on the website.
Purakayastha’s counsel told the court the allegations made in the FIR were “absolutely absurd” and did not, in any way, come under “terrorist act”.
The duo had challenged their arrest in the Delhi high court, which dismissed their petitions, following which they moved the Supreme Court in appeal.
