AMRITSAR: The opposition to the e-auctioning of the Golden Temple model by the central government has escalated, with former Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab, Sukhbir Badal, urging the government to return the model to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) if it is unable to preserve it even as the highest bid received for the revered model has crossed Rs 11 lakh.
Sukhbir posted on X that he was deeply saddened to learn that the model of Golden Temple presented by SGPC to Prime Minister Narendra Modi was being auctioned. He said that the model was gifted as a symbol of divine blessings and a sacred insignia of Akal Purakh and the Gurus. Auctioning it off would be a grave disrespect and would deeply hurt the religious sentiments of the Sikh community.
Notably, the e-auction of the mementos received by Modi was being held by National Gallery of Modern Art which will end on October 31.

It is the prominent spiritual site of Sikhism. It is one of the holiest sites in Sikhism, alongside the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur and Gurdwara Janam Asthan in Nankana Sahib. The model is gracefully placed on an acrylic base. The structure of the temple is faithfully depicted with attention to the smallest detail.” The Golden Temple has a product ID:MEMGLS_17699
According to the website, a total of 29 bids have been quoted for the Golden Temple model whose base price is Rs 13500 and the highest quoted price so far is 11,11,100.
Meanwhile Sukhbir earnestly requested Modi to immediately halt the auction.”He said if the government finds itself unable to preserve this sacred and invaluable gift then it should returned to the holy emblem to SGPC.
Earlier, SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami said that the model of Golden Temple should not be included in the auction of honors and gifts received by Modi stating that this was not just an ordinary gift but holds immense significance as a symbol of devotion and respect.
