Five farmers ended their lives over crop failure or agriculture-related financial stress in Yavatmal, Maharashtra, between August 13 and 15, an activist in Nagpur claimed on Friday. An official confirmed the incidents but said the causes of these suicides were yet to be ascertained.
As many as 1,565 farmer suicides have taken place in Vidarbha so far this year, said activist Kishore Tiwari.
Manoj Rathod (35), a resident of Yerad village, hanged himself due to financial crisis on August 15. A day earlier, tribal farmers Karnu Kinake (51) of Tembhi and Shalu Pawar (42) of Umar Vihir died by suicide as they had suffered losses after their crops were damaged by wild animals, said Tiwari. On August 13, Namdeo Waghmare, (45) from Tivrang village, and Ramrao Rathod (42) of Lohara took their own lives due to financial stress. agencies
