Google has falsely flagged two popular Samsung apps, Messages and Wallet, as harmful. According to a report by 9to5Google, the issue first cropped up a few days back, when users began receiving warnings from Google Play Protect, Google’s security service, that the apps were potentially dangerous.
What is Google Play Protect?
Google Play Protect scans apps for potential security threats, such as malware and phishing attacks. In the case of the Samsung Messages and Wallet apps, Google Play Protect incorrectly flagged them as apps that were trying to spy on users. The warning message, according to the report, which users received read, “This app tries to spy on personal data such as SMS messages, photos, audio recordings, or call history.”
Samsung has confirmed that the Samsung Messages and Wallet apps are safe to use and that the issue is due to a temporary failure of Google’s servers. In a statement on Samsung forums, the company said, “It has been confirmed that the phenomenon of a device being marked as a harmful app with a pop-up saying there is a device security problem when using the Samsung Messages app was caused by a temporary failure of the Google server.” Samsung also confirmed that the issue has been fixed and users can use the apps normally without worrying that these are harmful apps.
