“Sharing photos on WhatsApp just got an upgrade — now you can send in HD,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a post on Facebook and Instagram Channels.
HD Photos is rolling out globally over the next few weeks and WhatsApp said that the HD Videos option is also coming soon.
“For special moments that you want friends and family to enjoy in every little detail, you now have the option to share photos in higher resolution, all while protected by WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption,” WhatsApp said in a statement.
How to send HD photos on WhatsApp
In order to send an image in high definition, users can:
- Open WhatsApp and access a chat to send an HD photo.
- Tap on the camera icon or file icon to access photos stored in the phone.
- Add a caption if needed and press send.
- A pop-up on WhatsApp will ask whether you want to send the photo in “Standard quality” (1,365×2,048 pixels) or “HD quality” (2,000×3,000 pixels).
- Select an option and the photo will be sent to the receiver(s).
- HD photos will be marked “HD” in the bottom left corner.
“To ensure sharing photos over WhatsApp remains fast and reliable, ‘Standard Quality’ will continue to be the default option when photos are sent in,” the company said.
Additionally, if users receive a photo when they have low bandwidth connectivity, they can choose on a photo-by-photo basis whether to keep the standard version or upgrade it to HD.
