NEW DELHI: Celebrations erupted at BJP headquarters on Friday, a day after the women’s reservation bill was cleared by both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was given a rousing welcome and felicitated by BJP’s Mahila Morcha members.
He will address BJP supporters shortly.
The Prime Minister late on Thursday congratulated all Indians for being part of a defining moment in the country’s democratic journey.
“A defining moment in our nation’s democratic journey! Congratulations to 140 crore Indians. I thank all the Rajya Sabha MPs who voted for the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. Such unanimous support is indeed gladdening,” he said in a long post on X, formerly Twitter.

He also hailed the women of the country for their contribution and called the passage of the bill a ‘historic’ step.
“With the passage of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam in Parliament, we usher in an era of stronger representation and empowerment for the women of India. This is not merely a legislation; it is a tribute to the countless women who have made our nation. India has been enriched by their resilience and contributions. As we celebrate today, we are reminded of the strength, courage, and indomitable spirit of all the women of our nation. This historic step is a commitment to ensuring their voices are heard even more effectively,” he said in the post.
The 27-year-long wait for parliamentary clearance for women’s quota in legislatures ended on Thursday as the Rajya Sabha unanimously endorsed the Constitution (128th Amendment) Bill 2023 that seeks to reserve one-third of seats in Lok Sabha and state legislatures.
The women’s quota bill – Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam – will automatically apply to assemblies of all states and UTs of Delhi and Puducherry.
