NEW DELHI: The BJP seeks to keep the pot boiling over the violence witnessed during the panchayat election in West Bengal and by of that it wants to keep mounting pressure on state chief minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee.
On Monday, BJP president JP Nadda constituted a five-member committee of women MPs to inquire into the alleged incidents of crimes and violence against women on a large scale in the recently-concluded panchayat election in West Bengal.
The committee comprises its convener Saroj Pandey, Rama Devi, Aparajita Sarangi, Kavita Patidar and Sandhya Rai.
The inquiry committee will submit its report to Nadda.
Earlier, the BJP had appointed a four-member fact-finding team to visit West Bengal and inquire into the violence that marked the panchayat elections. The team, led by the former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, included Baghpat MP and former Mumbai police commissioner Satyapal Singh, Silchar MP Rajdeep Roy and Dhaurahara MP Rekha Verma.
The team toured several districts, including violence-affected Cooch Behar, of the state for several days. Prasad accused the ruling TMC of unleashing a reign of terror after the West Bengal panchayat polls, stating that the misrule of TMC exceeded that of the previous Left government in the state.
He said, “Is this a sign of democracy? So many people have been killed and rendered homeless in post-poll violence. The misrule of TMC has surpassed the limits of all forms of misrule and tyranny that was once identified with the erstwhile Left Front regime in the state.”
Slamming the state administration for failing to protect cadres and supporters of opposition parties, he said, “Does voting for other political parties result in receiving bullets in Bengal.”
“In a democracy, everyone has the right to vote freely and fairly. But does that mean that those voting for opposition parties or supporting them will end up receiving a bullet or being rendered homeless?” he said.
The BJP West Bengal unit moved the Calcutta High Court challenging the poll-related irregularities and violations. BJP IT Cell head and co-in-charge of the state Amit Malviya said the high court has put the panchayat poll results on hold till several petitions are looked into.
Malviya has also been consistently seeking the comments of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over the Bengal violence.
On Monday, he tweeted, “WB panchayat elections saw more than 50 people dead, which includes Congress workers. Will Rahul Gandhi confront Mamata Banerjee and deplore violence or capitulate? His silence, so far, on the state sponsored bloodshed, reeks of cowardice and worse kind of political opportunism.”
Malviya also tweeted a video clip and alleged that a BJP worker Barun Ruidas of Khunberia village (Booth number 75) in Garbeta assembly, a Dalit, who was the polling agent in the recently-concluded panchayat polls, was thrashed by TMC workers.
He said, “After the election, Mamata Banerjee’s goons picked him up, took him to the TMC office, beat him mercilessly and later urinated on his face. Mamata Banerjee’s silence on this inhuman act and her administration’s complicity in hushing up the matter is appalling. This is not just political violence, which in itself is abhorrent, but also caste atrocity.”
The BJP has kept the heat on over TMC and Mamata.
