Hug, wink and now a ‘flying kiss’: Rahul Gandhi at centre of controversy again | India News

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi gave a fiery speech in Lok Sabha as the House took up debate on the no-confidence motion for the second day on Wednesday, but it was his “flying-kiss” gesture that grabbed all the attention.

Gandhi, while leaving the House after participating in the debate, was booed at by the treasury benches. He then turned around and blew a flying kiss.

BJP MP Smriti Irani said: “The person who spoke before me … an indecent gesture was made … only a misogynistic man can give a flying kiss to Parliament which seats female Members of Parliament … such indecent act has not been witnessed by the House ever before. The entire country has seen the culture of the (Gandhi) family.”

Taking strong exception to the gesture, over 20 women parliamentarians signed a complaint wherein they alleged that the Congress member made the “inappropriate gesture” towards Irani when she was speaking in the House during the debate on the no-confidence motion against the government.
BJP MP and Union minister Shobha Karandlaje, one of the signatories to the complaint, said that after “blowing a flying kiss towards Smriti Irani and all women members, he went away”. “This is totally misbehaviour of the member. This is inappropriate and indecent behaviour of a member,” she said.
Talking to reporters later, Irani said: “Never before has the misogynistic behaviour of a man been so visible in Parliament as what was been done by Rahul Gandhi today … We have heard that such indecent gestures are made on roads, we did not know misogyny is one of the traits of the Gandhi family.”
‘Gesture of affection’
Defending Rahul, the Congress said he never disrespects women and the BJP is indulging in an “indecent” act of accusing him of “misconduct” as it does not want a debate on Manipur violence.
Responding to the criticism, Congress whip in Lok Sabha Manickam Tagore accused Irani of suffering from “Rahul-phobia” and asked her to come out of it.

Party general secretary K C Venugopal said that throughout the Bharat Jodo Yatra, “those who joined it and watched it, all are seeing it as a symbol of humankind and love and affection … but those who are thinking something in their mind are misunderstanding. That is their problem, not Rahul Gandhi’s problem. Rahul Gandhi’s message is very clear opening ‘mohabbat ki dukaan’ in ‘nafrat ka bazaar’. It is very clear”.
Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi also defended Gandhi, saying: “I was in the visitors gallery and he (Rahul Gandhi) did it as a gesture of affection. They (BJP) can’t accept love.”

Congress MP Karti Chidambaram said, “I am not aware of the side-tracking strategy of the BJP. It’s unfortunate that they are trying to divert the attention from the content of the (Rahul Gandhi’s) speech.”
Not the first time
This is not the first time that Rahul Gandhi has found himself in the middle of such a controversy.
In July 2018, during a debate on a no-confidence motion, Rahul Gandhi had walked across the well of the Lok Sabha to give a hug to Prime Minister Narendra Modi after giving his speech. After hugging the PM, Rahul returned to his seat and winked.
The hug was the closing to a vehement hour-long attack on PM Modi, accusing him of favouring businessmen with defence deals and loan waivers rather than farmers.
