NEW DELHI: The BJP on Monday asked West Bengal chief minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee to sack her party MP Santanu Sen for his remarks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s sortie on a Tejas fighter aircraft.
“The TMC MP’s comments are a ‘new low’ in national politics. If there is even an ounce of integrity left in the TMC, they should sack the party MP,” BJP leader Shezad Poonawala said.
PM Modi had on Saturday took to the skies in the homegrown light combat aircraft Tejas after which he said the experience has bolstered his confidence in the country’s indigenous capabilities.
Commening on PM Modi’s sortie, TMC MP Santanu Sen had expressed apprehensions that the Tejas fighter might now get crashed.
“I’m a little bit afraid when Narendra Modi was very much there in the country, the ISRO failed. When Kangana Ranaut met Narendra Modi, her movie became a super flop,” Sen claimed.
“When Virat Kohli shook hands with Narendra Modi, he didn’t get a century for 3 consecutive years. And finally, after winning 10 consecutive matches in the recently held World Cup, just because our Prime Minister went to that stadium, India got defeated in the final. I’m afraid that this particular aircraft now crashes,” the TMC MP had said.
The BJP leaders reacted very strongly to his remarks.
“While hating PM Modi and the BJP, today you are hating India’s military and Indian Air Force so much that you are wishing them death. You are wishing for a crash of Tejas fighter jet. What has happened to Trinamool Congress? Mamata Banerjee, if you have even an ounce of patriotism and morality, you should expel Santanu Sen from the party with immediate effect,” Shehzad Poonawalla said.
BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi called the TMC MP’s remarks “serious and unfortunate.”
“This is unfortunate and serious. Under the leadership of the Prime Minister, Tejas is our completely indigenous aircraft. Today export orders are also coming for it. This has proved to be a milestone in the field of defence. And the PM has expressed the same sentiment, by taking a sortie in it,” the BJP leader added.
He took a dig at the opposition and said that it is their hopes, which took off from Bengaluru in 2018, that has crashed.
“In 2018, the opposition formed an alliance in India’s aerospace capital Bengaluru, against the BJP. This time too, they met in Patna, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. Crash Toh Aapke Armaano Ka Ho Raha Hai (your hopes are crashing),” he said.
West Bengal BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul said that it is very “astonishing” that an educated person, a doctor like Santanu Sen speaks like an “illiterate.”
“They (TMC) know only petty politics. You are talking against India … Whatever is against India, CM Mamata Banerjee and her team support it. They only attack PM Modi, BJP and they know how to do petty politics. It’s a shame that I belong to West Bengal. I’m ashamed,” Paul said.
The Congress had also taken a swipe at the Prime Minister after the sortie, and said it doesn’t cost the “master of chunavi photo-ops” much to acknowledge the efforts and endeavours prior to 2014.
