MIDNAPORE: A fourth-year student of electrical engineering at IIT Kharagpur, K Kiran Chandra, was found hanging in his hostel room late on Tuesday. Police have registered a case of unnatural death and an autopsy has been conducted. The institute in a press release claimed the 21-year-old had chosen “the path of self-harm”.
Kiran’s family members told reporters he was depressed over a project and had confided in his professor, who had brushed aside his apprehensions and asked him to complete it on time. The deadline for submitting the project was Tuesday, they said. The family, however, had not filed a police complaint till late Wednesday.
A resident of Chetla Thimmaipally in Telangana’s Medak district, Kiran was allotted room number 513 in Lal Bahadur Shastri Hall along with two other fourth-year students.
According to the statement issued by IIT Kharagpur, Kiran was in his room till about 7:30pm when his room-mates left for academic activities. Around 8.30pm, other boarders of LBS Hall found his room locked from inside. “The door was forced open, and he was found hanging. The security and other students brought him to the BC Roy Technology Hospital immediately. Despite all efforts by the doctors, Kiran was declared dead around 11:30 pm,” the statement said.
West Midnapore police superintendent Dhritiman Sarkar said the postmortem of the body was videographed and investigation was in progress.
Kiran’s father, Kethavath Chandra, told reporters that he was informed by IIT-Kharagpur about his son’s death around midnight.
“My son was good at studies. In the three years of his engineering course, he did not have any backlog. But he was depressed over this project. He had spoken to his professor, but was dismissed and asked to complete the project in time. I spoke to him last on October 16. He told me he was studying and would speak later. This is not about ragging, but they (IIT) could have helped him,” he said.
This is the third unnatural death at IIT Kharagpur in the past year. On October 14 last year, Faizan Ahmed, a third-year student was found dead in his hostel room. A special investigation team (SIT) is probing this case after a second autopsy pointed to murder. The case is being heard by the Calcutta High Court. In June this year, Suriya Deepan GS, a 22-year-old chemistry intern died under mysterious circumstances after falling ill.
