The odds are, of course, stacked heavily against the West Indies in the ODI series coming up, but the home side still has quite a few individuals who can present strong challenges to their more fancied visitors. Here Timesofindia.com highlights the top three player battles which could have a big
India’s cricket team prepares for the three-match One Day International (ODI) series in the Caribbean, starting on Thursday. Six white-ball specialists, including Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson, Hardik Pandya, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, and Umran Malik, have joined the remaining 11 Test squad.
After winning the two-Test series 1-0, India gear up to face the West Indies in a three-match ODI series starting Thursday. TimesofIndia.com here looks at the top 3 West Indies cricketers to watch out for in the ODI series.
India, like the previous two Tests, will be anticipated to dominate the West Indies, but the series gives an important opportunity for players such as Suryakumar, Kishan, Samson, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Umran Malik.
In the absence of injured Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar, who has not been able to reproduce his superhuman T20 form in ODIs, can build a claim for the number four place.
Despite a hat-trick of first-ball ducks in the previous series against Australia, the X-factor hitter is expected to open the series.
KL Rahul, who is recovering from thigh surgery, will be a strong contender for the number one wicket-keeper spot when he returns. With Rishabh Pant unlikely to be fit in time for the World Cup, both Kishan and Samson have a chance to make a claim for the second wicketkeeper’s spot in his absence.
Samson is used to being in and out of the team, but he will be aiming for game time in his comeback series to build on his average of 66 in 11 ODIs.
Kishan, who performed admirably with the bat and behind the wickets in the Test series, is expected to be the wicketkeeper for the first ODI. That leaves Samson and Suryakumar to compete for the final middle-order place.
Ruturaj Gaikwad will spend more time on the bench as Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill open the innings.
Hardik Pandya, who hasn’t played since the IPL, has a busy schedule ahead of him, with five T20Is following the ODIs, putting workload management front and centre. Given that he will captain the T20I team, he may be given a rest during the ODI series.
In the bowling department, it’s another chance for tearaway pacer Umran Malik to shine. The 23-year-old Jammu and Kashmir native has a penchant for leaking runs but is a genuine wicket-taking potential. In seven One-Day Internationals, he has 13 wickets.
Chahal has fallen down the spinner pecking order, and Kuldeep Yadav was selected ahead of him in the most recent series against Australia. The leggie will be waiting for his chance with bated breath.
Mohammed Siraj will spearhead the pace attack, with Jaydev Unadkat, Mukesh Kumar, and all-rounder Shardul Thakur all available.
The West Indies will be looking for a fresh start with the India series after failing to qualify for the ODI World Cup.
Shimron Hetmyer and Oshane Thomas‘ comeback will help the home team. Both played their last ODI in 2021.
Alick Athanaze, one of the few West Indies batters who shone in the Test series, will be the one to watch.
