NEW DELHI: The number of Jan Dhan accounts reaching the 50-crore mark is a significant milestone, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, and lauded the fact more than half of these accounts belong to women.
“This is a significant milestone. It is heartening to see that more than half of these accounts belong to our ‘nari Shakti. With 67% of accounts opened in rural and semi-urban areas, we are also ensuring that the benefits of financial inclusion reach every corner of our nation,” the PM said on microblogging site X, formerly Twitter.
The total number of Jan Dhan accounts, as per latest reports submitted by banks, crossed 50 crore on August 9, 2023. Out of these, 56% accounts belong to women and 67% have been opened in rural/semi-urban areas. The deposits in these accounts total more than Rs 2 lakh crore and about 34 crore RuPay cards have been issued in these accounts free of cost. The average balance in PMJDY (PM Jan Dhan Yojana) accounts is Rs 4,076 and more than 5.5 crore PMJDY accounts are receiving DBT (direct benefit transfer) benefits, according to an official statement. The national mission on financial inclusion popularly known as Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) was launched on Augusts 28, 2014. It has now completed almost nine years.
