NEW DELHI: JD(S) national president and former Prime Minister Deve Gowda on Thursday sacked senior leader C M Ibrahim as party’s Karnataka unit chief for raising a banner of revolt against party’s decision to align with the BJP for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Deve Gowda dissolved the state working committee and appointed his son HD Kumaraswamy as the ad-hoc president of the state unit.
Action against Ibrahim comes days after he questioned Deve Gowda’s decision to join hands with the BJP. On October 16, Ibrahim had held a meeting with “like-minded” people of the JD(S) and announced that the party led by him was the original one. He also announced the formation of a core committee that would submit a memorandum to the party supremo that the JD(S) should not go with the BJP. The senior JD(S) leader had also claimed that most of the party MLAs are against any alliance with the saffron party in the state.
Addressing a press conference, Gowda said, “Ibrahim has been removed as per the party constitution. I have removed him, and the new president H D Kumaraswamy has been appointed.”
The former PM said that all the state units of the JD(S) including Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Kerala had given their consent to go with the BJP. He also claimed that many Muslim leaders in the JD(S) have also supported the party’s decision.
“To strengthen the party, our national president today took the decision to dissolve the old unit and announced the ad-hoc committee in my leadership. Naturally, it will be communicated to him (CM Ibrahim). My responsibility is to strengthen the party. My concentration is to develop my party,” HD Kumaraswamy said.
The BJP and the JD(S), which were decimated by the Congress in the last assembly elections, have joined hands to take on the grand old party in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The alliance was announced after Deve Gowda and Kumaraswamy met Union home minister Amit Shah. Several JD(S) leaders have opposed this alliance.
