NEW DELHI: Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud on Friday administered oath of office to new Supreme Court judges — Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Sarasa Venkatanaryanan Bhatti, taking the working strength of the apex court to 32 judges, two short of the sanctioned strength.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by SC judges, attorney general R Venkataramani, solicitor general Tushar Mehta, law officers, senior advocates and members of the bar bodies. While Justice Bhuyan will have a tenure of little more than six years, Justice Bhatti’s tenure as a SC judge would be a little less than four years.
Son of former advocate general of Assam, Justice Bhuyan had enrolled as an advocate in March 1991 and was designated a senior advocate in September 2010. He was appointed additional judge of Gauhati HC in October 2011 and was confirmed as a permanent judge in March 2013. He was transferred to the Bombay HC in October 2019 and then to Telangana HC in October 2021. He became CJ of Telangana HC on June 28 last year. With Justice Bhuyan’s elevation, Assam will have two judges in the SC, the other being Justice Hrishikesh Roy who was appointed as SC judge in September 2019.
Justice Bhatti had enrolled as an advocate in January 1987 and practiced at Andhra HC. After bifurcation of the state, he was sworn in as a judge of AP HC. He was transferred to Kerala HC on March 2019 and became CJ of that HC a month and half back.
