JAMSHEDPUR: Maoist rebels shot dead a 40-year-old former panchayat member in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum district on Monday. The victim, identified as Kamal Purty, was also a former associate of the outlawed People’s Liberation Front of India, police claimed.
This marks the sixth Maoist killingin the region since August 19, following the brutal murders of five villagers in the Saranda-Porahat forest area.The earlier victims were suspected of being police informers, according to police, who had claimed that the villagers had past affiliations with banned groups.
Speaking about Monday’s killing, SP Ashutosh Shekhar said; “Investigation is ongoing to identify the extremists responsible for the killing.”
