Shami was brought into the team for the New Zealand match and went on to grab the opportunity with both hands.The right-arm pacer accounted for 14 wickets in just three matches to become the highest wicket taker (45) for India in the history of the World Cup.He surpassedJavagal Srinath and Zaheer Khan‘s joint record, both of who have 44 wickets to their names.
Shami achieved the milestone in just 14 matches while Zaheer and Srinath took 23 and 34 matches respectively. He has taken 14 wickets so far in just three matches in this edition.
Shami’s carnage began in Dharamsala against New Zealand when he chipped in with 5/54 to bag man of the match award in his first match of this World Cup. He then returned impressive figures of 4/22 against England in Lucknow.
And on Thursday against Sri Lanka, Shami again proved to be the wrecker in chief for India with his another five-wicket haul (5/18) that helped India clinch a massive 302 runs victory and become the first team to seal semi-final spot.
Shami also drew level with Australian pacer Mitchell Starc (3) for most fifers in ODI World Cups.

It was India’s seventh win from as many matches in this year’s 50-over tournament, and arguably their most dominant, with Sri Lanka’s batters lasting under 20 overs while chasing a 358-run target.
The defeat all but ended Sri Lanka’s remaining hopes of making the knockout stages with Kusal Mendis’s side suffering their fifth defeat from seven matches.
