GURGAON: Mohit Yadav, alias Monu Manesar, was arrested on Tuesday by an SIT that is investigating the communal violence that broke out in Nuh on July 31, the first time the Bajrang Dal activist has been taken into custody since he emerged as a politically influential gau rakshak and the leader of a network of cow vigilantes in the state.
Soon after the SIT arrested him in Manesar, where he lives, took him to Nuh and produced him at the district court there, Monu was handed over to the Rajasthan police, which had applied for his transit remand for its own investigation into the killings of two Muslim men from Bharatpur – Nasir and Junaid – on February 16 this year, allegedly at the hands of cow vigilantes. Acting on inputs they received, the SIT members, comprising Nuh police crime branch personnel and led by inspector Amit, staked out the grocery store at Sector 1 in Manesar on Tuesday morning.
Monu taken to Deeg for double murder probe
Dressed in civvies, the SIT members parked their two cars, a Bolero and a Creta, at vantage points and waited for him at Sector 1 in Manesar on Tuesday morning. Monu showed up there around 11am. The SIT picked him up as he was on his way out, source said.
Monu (32) was booked in an FIR filed suo motu by the Nuh police at its Cyber police station on August 26, invoking sections 153 (malignantly or wantonly doing anything which is illegal, gives provocation to any person intending or knowing it to be likely that it will cause rioting), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups), 295A and 298 (outraging religious feelings), 504 (intentional insult and provocation) and 109 (act or offence said to be committed in consequence of abetment) of the IPC. Sections of the Arms Act were added in the FIR after his arrest.
The rioting that broke out in Nuh on July 31 was preceded by days of vitriolic posts by individuals from two communities surrounding the Brij Mandal Jalasbhishek Yatra, an annual religious procession that begins in Gurgaon and ends at the Radha Krishna temple in Nuh with a stopover at the Nalhar Shiv temple, also in Nuh. Much of these posts centred around Monu’s speculated presence at the yatra, which came under attack after it entered Nuh on July 31 by a heavily-armed mob.
The video for which Monu was booked was posted on August 26, according to the FIR, two days before the VHP and other organisations announced they would complete the disrupted yatra (eventually, police did not allow the yatra on August 28 but let seers perform rituals at the temples).
Constable Manoj Kumar said in his complaint, based on which the FIR against Monu was filed, that he came across a Facebook account of ‘Mohit Manesar’ while monitoring social media. The account had posted a video in which Monu purportedly says, “Parinam ki chinta hum nahi karte…. vaar ek bar hi hoga, par aakhir hoga (we don’t bother about result…. We will strike once, but it will be final)”
The FIR against Monu is the 12th linked to hate posts that Nuh police have registered since the July 31 violence. He is the third to be arrested, the other two being Shahid and Abid. Cow vigilante Bittu Bajrangi, who claims to be an associate of Monu, was also booked and arrested by Faridabad police on August 2 for posting a Facebook video with the provocative jibe. Bittu was arrested later again by Nuh police on rioting charges for attacking a police team during the July 31 violence. So far, Nuh police have made 317 arrests in connection with the riots.
A Rajasthan Police team was present at Nuh court when Monu was produced before judicial magistrate (first class) Amit Verma, who sent Monu to 14 days in judicial custody and granted the application for transit remand. From Nuh, Monu was taken to Deeg in Rajasthan, where officers investigating the deaths of Junaid (39) and Nasir (21), whose charred bodies were found in a burnt Bolero in Bhiwani after they were allegedly abducted by cow vigilantes near the Nuh border on the suspicion of being cattle smugglers. Monu had denied involvement but police wanted to examine his role in the conspiracy.
