MUMBAI: An elderly woman has been booked for allegedly biting a woman police constable who along with the Bandra police team reached the residential building and tried to pacify her for objecting to the building resident not allowing them to carry out the building lift maintenance and closed-circuit television (CCTV) on Saturday.
The incident occurred at The Modern Park View Society in Bandra (West) when the suspect, Medha Jaffery (67), created a ruckus with the society members when the technician was called to carry out the maintenance work at around 9 am, said the police.
Bandra police have registered a first information report (FIR) against Jaffery under the Indian Penal Code sections 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), and 504 (intentional insult). “A notice has been served to the woman for objecting to the society to carry out the work and abusing and biting the cops who went to pacify the matter. She has to appear before the investigation team when called,” said Bandra police senior inspector Sanjay Marathe.
Police have served notice to Jaffery. No arrest has been made in the case. She will have to appear before the investigation team when called. “If she does not abide by the notice, further action will be initiated,” said the police.
The case was registered against Jaffery by Bandra police constable Rekha Awhad (44) after she was bitten by the latter when tried to make her understand the reason necessary to carry out the lift maintenance. “The lift maintenance work was in process after the registrar sanctioned the society to carry it out. However, Jaffery was against the maintenance work. The reason for her objection is unknown. The police team reached the spot after the society called on the emergency number 100 and asked for police protection. Female cops were sent to the spot when Jaffery bit one of them,” said Marathe.
In the complaint, constable Rekha Awhad said: “Jaffery was abusive on seeing the cops. She repeated that she did not know who the people who came in uniform were and knew that we were just those who were people who arrived on dialing 100. She bit on my hand when I tried to take her to the police station.”
