BHOPAL: A Muslim woman was allegedly beaten up by her family members for voting for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Sehore district of Madhya Pradesh. The party emerged victorious in Madhya Pradesh, which went to polls November 17.
The woman was assaulted on December 4, a day after the election results were announced for four states, including MP.
Narrating her ordeal, Samina said, “My family and I were jubilant over the BJP’s victory on December 4. However, this celebration unveiled my vote for BJP instead of Congress, which enraged my brother-in-law, Javed”.
The 30-year-old victim is a resident of Barkheda Hasan village in MP’s Sehore. She had lodged a complaint with the collectorate and police on Friday.
A staunch supporter of the Congress party, Javed has always harboured resentment toward our allegiance to the BJP, she alleged.
“Initially he hurled abuses, but later Javed physically assaulted me with sticks. He was supported by my husband during the altercation,” Samina claimed.
Following the assault, the victim filed a complaint at the Ahmedpur police station. A case has been registered against the accused brother-in-law under sections 294, 323, 506, and 34 of the law.
Naushad Khan, state president of the National Pasmanda Muslim Federation, accompanied the victim and her father to the collector’s office. They lodged a formal complaint with collector Praveen Singh, urging stringent action against the assailant.
As the video of the assault continues to circulate on social media, police have arrested those named in the complaint. “We received the complaint and arrests have been made in this regard,” SP Sehore Mayank Awasthi told TOI.
