Netflix, like other streaming services, seems to be keenly interested in live sports. The streaming giant is now introducing the “Netflix Cup,” a golf tournament that will feature race-car drivers from its popular Formula 1 documentary series “Drive to Survive” against golfers from a similar show called “Full Swing.”
The tournament will feature some of the renowned Formula 1 drivers, including Alex Albon from Williams Racing, Pierre Gasly from BWT Alpine F1 Team, Lando Norris from McLaren Racing, and Carlos Sainz Jr. from Scuderia Ferrari. The event will also feature PGA Tour golfers such as Rickie Fowler, Max Homa, Collin Morikawa, and Justin Thomas.

The two teams will be competing in a match-play tournament at the Wynn Golf Club located on the Las Vegas Strip. The event is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, November 14. There will be four groups in the tournament, each consisting of one Formula 1 driver and one PGA Tour pro. They will compete in an eight-hole match, and the top two teams will advance to the final hole to compete for the first-ever Netflix Cup title.
“We love to see how our sports series [F1 and PGA] have brought increased fandom to sports leagues and competitions all over the world,” said Gabe Spitzer, vice president of nonfiction sports at Netflix, in a statement.
Netflix plans to make the Cup available on-demand after the initial livestream. No information about the duration of the stream has been released, but typical games of 18-hole golf last four to five hours.
Several streaming platforms are now trying to capitalise on the popularity of sports. Amazon has already placed big bets on multi-year deals for sports leagues like the NFL’s “Thursday Night Football,” and Apple has secured deals with Major League Baseball and Major League Soccer. NBCUniversal’s Peacock also offers MLB access, along with WWE content and other events. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. Discovery has also launched a sports tier.
