PATNA: Bihar CM and JD(U) de facto leader Nitish Kumar would address a public rally in Varanasi, the constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on December 24 to “ensure defeat of the BJP in the 2024 general elections”, JD(U) Uttar Pradesh state unit convener Satyendra Patel told TOI on Saturday.
“Varanasi is the place where Hindu from different parts of the globe come to attain salvation (Moksh). We are organizing Nitish Kumar’s rally to ensure that the BJP attains salvation from power during the 2024Lok Sabha election,” Patel, currently in Varanasi, told this newspaper over phone.
Nitish’s proposed rally in Varanasi assumes political significance as it is being organized just six days after PM Modi’s rally in his home constituency on December 18. “The PM Modi will be on a two-day tour to Varanasi on December 17-18, and he will address a mega public rally in Sevapuri area in his constituency,” BJP’s Kashi region president Dilip Singh Patel had told the media a few days back.
“As the BJP has announced Modi’s mega rally on December 18, we are now looking for a bigger ground (for Nitish’s rally) where at least three lakh people can be assembled. We will ensure that the crowd at Nitish rally must be bigger than the previous and upcoming rallies of Modi in Varanasi,” JD(U) leader Patel said.
Bihar’s rural development minister and JD(U) in-charge for Uttar Pradesh Shrawan Kumar on Saturday held a series of meetings with the party workers in and around Varanasi and exhorted people to come to Nitish’s rally in maximum numbers. “The Bihar minister Shrawan also took stock of the preparations going on for Nitish rally in Varanasi,” Uttar Pradesh JD(U)’s senior vice-president Awlesh Kumar Singh told TOI over phone. He said the Bihar CM’s rally most probably would be held at the Jagatpur Inter College ground in Rohaniya assembly constituency in Varanasi.
Insiders in the UP JD(U) said, the party has planned to filed Nitish Kumar as the INDIA bloc’s candidate from for Phulpur, a Kurmi-dominated constituency in Uttar Pradesh, to draw a parallel with Modi who is likely to contest for third time from Varanasi. But the Bihar CM had earlier denied any plan to contest from Phulpur.
In 2004, Nitish contested from two Lok Sabha constituencies. He was elected from Nalanda seat but lost election from his traditional constituency Barh. A strong speculation in JD(U) circles is that Nitish may try from two Lok Sabha seats in 2024 also. His first choice will be Nalanda (in Bihar), while Uttar Pradesh unit of JD(U) wants Nitish to contest from either Phulpur or Mirzapur.
Sources in JD(U) said If Nitish is projected as the INDIA bloc’s combined candidate, he may opt to contest from both Nalanda and Phulpur or Mirzapur to give a symbolic challenge to PM Narendra Modi (in Varanasi) by contesting from the almost neighbouring constituency Phulpur or Mirzapur.
In 2014, Modi contested from two Lok Sabha constituencies: Varanasi and Vadodara. He won in both constituencies, defeating Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal in Varanasi and Madhusudan Mistry of the Indian National Congress in Vadodara. Modi preferred to be the MP of Varanasi.
