RAJKOT/GANDHINAGAR: Nine persons lost their lives in rain-related mishaps in the last 24 hours in Gujarat, taking the toll since June 1 to 102, even as the IMD issued an ‘orange alert’, saying the state is expected to receive “heavy to very heavy rainfall” on Monday.

The weather department also predicted “isolated extremely heavy rainfall” in Devbhumi Dwarka, Rajkot, Bhavnagar and Valsad districts in the next 24 hours.
Two national highways, 10 state highways and 300 rural roads were closed in the state on Saturday due to flooding, and traffic could resume on Sunday only at places where the water has receded. Union home minister Amit Shah spoke to chief minister Bhupendra Patel regarding the situation.

Several villages of Rajkot were put on alert as three major dams in the district overflowed on Sunday. While Aji-1 and Nyari-1 dams started overflowing, eight out of 29 channels of Bhadar-1 dam in Jetpur were opened as the water reached the ‘rule level’ of 32 feet on Sunday. The authorities alerted 22 villages on the bank of Aji river downstream. The river, which passes through Rajkot city, is overflowing.
Meanwhile, flood waters receded in rain-ravaged Junagadh district on Sunday and the focus shifted to restoring normalcy and clearing the sludge that covered roads and streets. Officials said nearly 3,000 people have been shifted to safer places since the onslaught of rain. Junagadh city recorded 241mm rainfall in the 24-hour period ending 6am Sunday, causing severe flooding in several parts.
District collector Anil Ranavasiya said, “Our main focus now is towards cleanliness in the city. Junagadh district received 55mm of rainfall on Sunday. There was no rain in the city. Three persons including two women died due to the downpour.” Ranavasiya said water has receded from most areas, and more than 1,100 sanitation workers have started clearing the sludge and garbage from roads. Schools and colleges will open from Monday and tourists will be allowed at Bhavnath Taleti.
