JAMMU: A head constable of the BSF died in unprovoked pre-dawn Pakistani firing Thursday along the International Border (IB) in the Ramgarh sector of Jammu’s Samba. Lal Fam Kima, 50, was a native of Mizoram.
This was the third violation of a 2021 ceasefire agreement in 24 days and the sixth so far this year by the Pakistan Rangers along the IB in Jammu region.
Lal Fam Kima was shot around 12.30am while on his rounds at a post in Ramgarh’s Narayanpur area. “Lal Fam Kima was initially taken to the community health centre at Ramgarh. After initial treatment, the soldier was referred to Jammu. Unfortunately, the trooper succumbed to his injuries around 2.30am during treatment,” an official source said. Samba additional SP Surinder Choudhary confirmed the death.
Lal Fam Kima is survived by his wife, Lalzarliani, two daughters and a son. His body is likely to be flown home to Aizawl on Friday.
“Director General and all ranks of Border Security Force salute the supreme sacrifice of HC/GD Lal Fam Kima of 148 Bn who succumbed to injuries during unprovoked cross-border firing along the Jammu border. Prahari Parivar stands by his family in this trying time,” the BSF stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Other BSF personnel retaliated to the Pakistani firing in Samba and the exchange continued for some time, the official sources said .
Indian and Pakistani forces had reached the ceasefire agreement on February 25, 2021. The two other recent breaches of the pact by Pakistani troops occurred on October 17 and 26.
On October 17, two BSF personnel were injured in the Arnia sector. On October 26, the Pakistan Rangers rained bullets and mortar shells at BSF posts and villages, injuring two BSF troopers and a civilian woman. The attacks drew “befitting” BSF retaliation, the force had said.
