AHMEDABAD: Prime Minister Narendra Modi guaranteed to make India among the top three economies of the world. Speaking at the 20th anniversary celebrations of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit (VGGS) organised at Science City in Ahmedabad, PM Modi said that India is poised to become a global economic powerhouse.
PM Modi said that the idea of VGGS was to make Gujarat the growth engine of India. “Today, we are undisputedly the fastest growing economy in the world. India is poised to become a global economic powerhouse. Modi guarantees India will be among the top three economies of the world,” he said.
“In the last century, Gujarat was known as a trader state. Today, it has a new identity as an industrial manufacturing hub. Its trade reputation has also strengthened. Since the 2003 VGGS, we have a thousand success stories and case studies. In the past two decades, the investment in our automobile sector has gone up nine-folds, our manufacturing output grew 12x, chemical sector here is famed across the world; the dyes and intermediates made in Gujarat account for 75% of total Indian production, with 30,000 food processing units functional here, agro and processed food industry has begun exporting from Gujarat, our pharma industry has grown and the state accounts for 50% of medical devices production and 80% for cardiac stent production across the country,” the PM said enlisting Gujarat’s growth statistics.
“Some 70% of the processed diamonds in India come from Gujarat and the state accounts for 80% of the diamond exports from across the country. Gujarat is a top exporter state with $2 billion worth of exports in the last fiscal year,” the PM further went on to say.
Modi also appealed to the industrialist to identify sectors which can chart new possibilities for India.
“You must think how VGGS can give momentum to the vision of identifying new opportunities for India. Our startup ecosystem must greatly benefit from this summit. In today’s deeply connected world, there is a rising need for finance and tech institutions. Gujarat already has a Gift City whose relevance is growing by the day. VGGS will also be focused on strengthening Gift City to expand its global presence,” he explained.
The PM also drew parallels between the maiden VGGS in 2003 and traced its growth trajectory. According to him, against some 30+ exhibitors and a handful of countries, today VGGS sees participation from some 130+ countries and 2,000+ exhibitors.
Speaking on the forward vision for the upcoming VGGS 2024, the Prime Minister said, “The coming 20 years are far more important than the past 20 years of VGGS. By then we will be approaching the 100thIndependence Day of India in 2047. It is not the time to stop or halt. Instead, we should work towards making VGGS an enabler for making India a developed country and an Aatmanirbhar Bharat,” he said.
PM Modi also cited how idea, imagination and implementation are core concepts incorporated in the idea of VGGS, which has made it a resounding success over the years.
“We have taken the idea of VGGS forward and exhibited the courage to show the world something new which India has never done before. Ideas and imagination may be really good but to mobilise the entire system and delivering results is very important. This is such a job where detailed planning and focus on capacity building is required to organise something of this scale,” he said.
The Prime Minister also recalled how VGGS was instrumental in scripting the growth story of Gujarat.
“Some 20 years ago, we sowed the seeds of VGGS which has now grown into a vibrant tree. The generation today might not even be aware of the 2001 earthquake that left the state devastated, the famine and drought that it battled before. The collapse of the Madhupura Mercantile Cooperative Bank paralysed the cooperative banking sector here and it was a chaotic situation for the state’s economy while its financial sector was in doldrums. Back then, I was a new MLA and did not have much experience as a chief minister either. But I took up this challenge of transforming Gujarat. I had unshakeable trust in this state and the people of Gujarat,” he said.
“People who always come with a predetermined agenda continue to analyse the situation and say that people and industries will move out of Gujarat and the devastated state will be a burden on the country. There was an attempt to create an atmosphere of despair. It was said that Gujarat will never be able to be back on its feet. I was determined that whatever the circumstances be, I will pull Gujarat out of this situation,” Modi said.
“The idea of VGGS was not just bringing Gujarat back on its feet. We were rather thinking much ahead in the future. VGGS eventually became a medium of letting Gujarat meet the world eye to eye. The decision making abilities and focused approach of the government of Gujarat was placed before the world. It became a medium to showcase the talent of India, its culture, and investment opportunities. We organised VGGS during Navratri and made it a festival of Gujarat’s industrial development,” the PM said.
He also took on the previous Congress regime at the centre stating, “Back then central ministers refused to attend the VGGS event. They did not support Gujarat’s initiatives and instead threatened foreign investors, to prevent them from going to Gujarat. Yet, international investors came to Gujarat at a time when they weren’t given a special incentive. They came to a place where they found good governance and fair governance and policy driven governance and an equal system of growth here.”
The PM also recounted how Gujarat did not even have big hotels where foreign guests could be accommodated and the challenge before holding VGGS 2009 when the world grappled with a major recession.
“Everyone told me this event would be a failure but I was determined to organise the event at the cost of criticism. By 2009 VGGS summit, a new chapter was written in Gujarat’s industrial history,” the PM said.
